With a decisive 4-0 victory over Kerala Blasters at the Mumbai Football Arena on Sunday, Mumbai City FC reached new heights in a season in which they have already been unbeatable. Mumbai returned to the top of the Indian Super League (ISL) with the victory, ending Kerala Blasters’ eight-game winning streak and setting a league record with their eight consecutive victories. Mumbai City FC scored all four of their goals in the opening 22 minutes of the game for the first time ever in their history.

In the fourth minute, Argentine attacker Jorge Pereyra gave the home team the lead. Pereyra, a former player for Kerala Blasters, returned to avenge his old team by providing Mumbai with the lead with a good finish.

In the 10th and 16th minutes, respectively, Greg Stewart and Bipin Singh each doubled and tripled the lead. Another goal from Jorge Pereyra, who headed past Prabhsukhan Gill to make it 4-0 for the home team, sealed the scoreline.

Especially after that turbulent start, it appeared that Kerala was in for a beating and a humiliating score. To their credit, the Blasters were able to hold on for the duration of the game to maintain a 4-0 lead.

Another long ball sliced through the defence of the Blasters before they could regroup. Diaz’s run across the channel was intercepted by Mehtab Singh, who held it up in the box before cutting it back for Bipin on the left. Before curling the ball into the upper left corner, the winger took his time. The game was subsequently decided by Diaz in the 22nd minute as he ran onto a through ball from Ahmed Jahouh and scored on a Victor Mongil deflection.

The fixture appeared to have slipped away from the Blasters before they could respond because of their dedication to attacking. After then, the home team controlled 59% of the possession and only gave up one shot on goal to the Blasters while maintaining a clean sheet.

Mumbai City FC, who entered the game as the most in-form team in the title chase along with the Blasters, made a strong statement with the victory. The streak for the Blasters, interestingly, occurred between two of their losses to Mumbai City FC this season.
